Egham students visit London for Science Live

Published Tuesday 11th of February 2014 03:28:18 PM

ACS Egham students have recently attended a series of lectures from some of Britain's top scientists at Science Live! London, on 31st January.

Over forty students travelled to the legendary West End theatre, The Dominion, for the series of talks from Professor Lord Robert Winston, Dr Andreas Sella, Dr Kate Lancaster, Professor Jim Al Khalili, and Dr Mark Miodownic.

All of the scientists were chosen for their ability to communicate with the students in a direct and exciting style. For example Professor Andreas Sella brought his lecture to life with visual displays of chemical reactions. The students were inspired by these lively speeches covering a range of fields including physics, medicine, chemistry and engineering.

As well as introducing the students to new theories, these fast moving speeches also offered an interactive element as the students were offered the opportunity to raise issues with the speakers and explore the themes in greater detail.

Philip McAvoy, science teacher at ACS Egham, commented on the trip:

'The trip to Science Live was a huge success and an experience that made a real impression on the students. It also offered an invaluable opportunity for them to develop their understanding of topics we have already covered in class whilst also introducing the students to new concepts in a fun and engaging way.'
