ACS Cobham student, Mercedes Weidmer, has recently attended the finals of the ARTiculation competition, after winning the West London regional heat, held at the Saatchi Gallery.

The ARTiculation competition is designed to both engage students with the arts and also develop their confidence and ability to communicate publically.

Mercedes, after winning her regional heat, then went on to compete in the ARTiculation finals held at Clare College, Cambridge. Over 74 schools and nearly 1000 students took part in the competition and finalists included representatives from Bedford School, Bangton Park School, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, St. Clares, Oxford, St. Marylebone School, St. Pauls Girls School and The Kings School Canterbury.

Mercedes was selected to represent ACS Cobham after an internal school competition where she competed against her peers, delivering a ten-minute presentation on Gustav Klimts Three Ages of Woman.

Her presentation shone through as she cleverly linked Kilmts work to the three generations of women within her own family, grandmother, mother and daughter. This interpretation highlighted her strong understanding of the themes and messages contained within the art and her ability to translate these complexities.

Head of Art Department at ACS Cobham, Cyrus Iravani, commented:

The competition is designed to engage students with art and develop their confidence and ability to express their opinions. Mercedes demonstrated all these attributes and we are immensely proud of all her achievements.

Mercedes added:

I have really enjoyed the entire process, it allowed me to independently explore an artwork and artist which I knew very little about, and thereby unveiled an entire movement of art which I was not familiar with. I am very thankful to my teacher Mr Iravani not only for introducing me to the competition but for supporting me throughout the process.

Mercedes was also interviewed by the BBC Culture Show for a special programme on the competition, ARTiculation: for the love of art, which is now available on the BBC iPlayer until 18th March.
