England Hockey selection and National finals for Canford School Hockey

Published Thursday 10th of April 2014 05:19:14 PM

Canford is celebrating another impressive Hockey season, with excellent performances by players at school fixture, regional and National levels.

Against schools from across the UK, both the U18 and U16 boys have reached National finals of their England Hockey Schools competitions. Both will play at Cannock on 1st/2nd May. The 1st XI are also the reigning Boarding Schools' Cup champions having won the title for the past two consecutive years.

On an individual level, we are delighted for Canfordian Alana Mercer, who has been selected for the U16s England Hockey squad. This followed a series of trials last year after her selection for the Futures Cup and is an exceptional achievement. With International matches against Holland/Germany/Spain/Belgium/Scotland & Ireland scheduled it promises to be an exciting year ahead and we wish her every success.

Among the highlights at County level, U18 and U16 girls and U16 and U14 boys teams all became County champions for the third consecutive year. In school fixtures, there were many fine victories across all the teams. The U16As had an unbeaten season while the U14Bs have now not lost a match at this level since February 2009!!
Terry Adby, Director of Hockey, commented:

"Canford Hockey has a deserved fine reputation in the region and I am delighted that we also continue to achieve at the highest levels Nationally, both in team and individual honours. I congratulate all our players who have contributed to another very successful Hockey season."
