With the Somerset County and South West indoor cricket titles under their belt, the Hazlegrove girls were thrilled to be on their way to Lords to contest the Lady Taverners National Championships against regional winners from across the country.

The five teams contesting the title were Horizon Community College from Yorkshire (North), Packwood Haugh from Shropshire (Midlands and Wales), Godolphin and Latymer from London (London East), St Ivo from Cambridgeshire (Midlands & East) and Hazlegrove from Somerset (South West).

An excited Hazlegrove contingent travelled up to Lords by train and enjoyed the warm reception they received when they arrived at the MCC Academy. Over 750 school teams across the country had entered this years competition and the finalists were all congratulated for reaching the last five.

The atmosphere was full of tension, excitement, emotion and nerves but play was quickly underway and the Hazlegrove girls got on with the job in hand. To give all the teams an equal chance, the tournament followed a round robin format with 8 over matches against each of the other finalists. Hazlegrove were certainly on form winning all four of their matches, scoring an amazing total of 461 runs along the way and bowling every team out inside the allotted overs. The girls bowled with accuracy and consistency, batted with a real purpose and their fielding was superb. In all, the whole team was outstanding and the girls were utterly delighted to win the title of National Champions.

As well as playing some excellent cricket, they were also able to enjoy a tour of Lords visiting the iconic Long Room, Media Centre, Players Changing Rooms and the Museum to see the real Ashes.
All in all, the day was a truly memorable experience, one that the Hazlegrove girls and their team of supporters will never forget...
