The Eco Green Flag was hoisted by members of the St Hilarys School Eco Team to celebrate their Green Flag Eco School Status, which was awarded in recognition of its achievement in working towards a sustainable lifestyle. The certificate and Green Flag was presented by ENCAMS, the charity which runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

The school, which has been following the Eco School Programme for over four years, has recognised its importance to sustainable development within the school environment and wider community. It is also part of an international group of schools working towards education for sustainable development and a better quality of life for local and global communities.

The Green Flag was hoisted for all to see on Friday 28th January 2011 by Mrs Susan Bailes, Headmistress; school Eco Reps and Julie Robinson, IAPS Education & Training Director, in celebration of the Eco award and the recent Inspection report, endorsing the schools quality of education and link with IAPS.

Jenny Brown, Head of Geography and one of the staff Eco/Fair Trade Coordinators at St Hilarys said, This is a great achievement and well deserved by all those involved in the activities, projects and campaigns embarked on over the last two years. The Eco Reps work has included the creation of an Eco Nature Trail; obtained Fair Trade School Status; were involved in The Big Tidy Up; set up recycling and energy and water saving schemes; are working on the Young Enterprise Award programme and encouraged all year groups to present an Eco/Fair Trade assembly for parents and pupils. We have so many more plans and initiatives for 2011 and we look forward to working with the staff, parents, local and international schools and the community as a whole to achieve these goals. She added, St Hilarys has also been awarded the Woodland Trust Green Tree School Silver Award, in recognition of all the planting, composting and efforts to raise pupil awareness to the fantastic school grounds.
