Silence descended on classrooms at St Benedict's School, Ealing when pupils in the Middle School participated in 'Readathon'. This annual fundraising event, organised by the English Department in conjunction with the School Librarian, saw pupils and teachers of English sitting quietly in the classroom and the school library enjoying the pleasure of the written word, reading anything and everything from novels to biographies, e-readers to graphic novels, magazines and comics.

Miss Williams-Pearce, School Librarian, organised displays of a range of books and gave out free book marks to the pupils. She was keen to stress the fun element of reading. 'Reading for pleasure enriches children's lives,' she commented. 'It was a delight to see the pupils not only so absorbed in their books but doing so for such a wonderful purpose.'

The monies raised, a total of £2,618.42, will be shared between such worthy causes as the CLIC Sargent charity and Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's charity. Both of these work to raise funds for seriously ill children. The pupils were also enthused to be improving the lives of other children through their sponsored reading. Valentina Elner- Kupcha (Year 7) took the opportunity to set herself the challenge of reading a series of her favourite historical novels. 'I love reading and it was inspiring to be doing so for children who are poorly,' she said.

Mr Watts, Head of English added, 'Every year the English department supports Readathon. Those who read for pleasure are more likely to flourish academically, socially and emotionally. Readathon fits with the St Benedict's ethos of caring for others through the actions of our lives: what better action than reading for pleasure!'
