St Benedict's artwork in RA Exhibition

Published on isbi School News dated Tuesday 22nd of July 2014

Two Sixth Form Art students from St Benedict's School, Ealing have received national recognition for their A Level art work. Niko Mirosevic-Sorgo's painting 'Creator and Creation' was chosen by the Royal Academy for their online exhibition of A Level Art and Madeline Brooking's work 'Precarious' was shortlisted for the same exhibition.

Mirosevic-Sorgo's work explores the link between the creator and their creation. A topic usually reserved for religious painting, this piece re-contextualises this link but through the lens of 21st Century consumerism. Here Ray Kroc, the creator of the McDonald's franchise, is immortalised in this portrait painted not with oils or acrylic but lard, the base ingredient of the iconic Big Mac. Vik Muniz, the Brazilian artist and photographer, and the Belgian artist Luc Tuymans have been particular inspirations for Mirosevic-Sorgo.

Brooking's work is a self-identity image, portraying the short time we have to fulfil our life's aspirations. The books represent her education, the piggybank her aspirations, and the hourglass the short time life gives to achieve those aspirations. Brooking has been particularly inspired by the famous Belgian surrealist artist, Rene Magritte.
