ACS Egham students travel to Devon for activities trip

Students from ACS Egham recently travelled to Appledore, North Devon, for a six-day trip to Skern Lodge, a residential centre that promotes learning through adventure.

Taking part in a variety of activities including assault courses, coastal hikes and kayaking, students were encouraged to push their boundaries and improve their self-confidence, attributes that engage with the core values of the International Baccalaureate (IB) to create knowledgeable, courageous and principled students.

Another key focus of the trip was to develop the students co-operative learning skills, channeled through an extensive range of team building challenges including raft building, abseiling and high climbing. Evaluating these activities, students completed conflict resolution games and reflective presentations, allowing them to analyse situations and gain a deeper understanding of how to work within a group.

Commenting on the success of the trip, Bill Roach, ACS Egham teacher and trip leader, said:

It was great to see the students develop leadership qualities and self esteem. Throughout the week they exceeded their comfort zones to achieve new skills both individually and as a team that they did not think were possible. New friendships have been made and confident communication has been established to assist each of them as they progress through their upcoming academic year."
