ACS Hillingon students return to Bulgaria for fifth year volunteering at orphanage

A group of 21 ACS Hillingdon students, aged 15 to 18, recently returned from a charitable volunteering project at the Dimcho Debeliano Orphanage in Silistra, Bulgaria.

Throughout the year students have been organising a programme of events to fundraise for improvements to the orphanage, which cares for 55 children, aged between 6 and 20 years old, including those with disabilities. Students also used social media to make contact with children from the orphanage, establishing friendships ahead of the trip.

A key part of this years visit saw the students decorate bathrooms and bedrooms, and contribute towards English lessons with interactive games and fun activities.

Now entering its fifth year, the partnership between the Dimcho Debeliano Orphanage and ACS Hillingdon is designed to help support the charity whilst providing students with an international perspective.

The annual expedition also contributes to the International Baccalaureate Diplomas Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) module, which encourages students to take an active role in the local and global community.

Chris Green, Assistant High School Principal at ACS Hillingdon and co-organiser of the expedition, commented:

It was great to see the students participating in such a worthy community project whilst demonstrating great maturity in some challenging situations. Although the physical improvements they made to the orphanage had a great impact, it was the time spent with the children and the friendships forged that proved most invaluable.
