Army Scholarships for Canford Pupils

Published Monday 12th of January 2015 03:10:51 PM

Many congratulations to Georgina Dean and Benjamin Howard-Allen who have both been awarded Army scholarships.

The selection process involved a detailed application form, school references, a series of interviews with Army careers liaison officers and two days of physical, mental, and academic aptitude testing alongside other potential Army officers at the Army Officer Selection Board base at Westbury.

Both Georgina and Ben passed the minimum GCSE criteria of As and Bs average comfortably, with Georgina gaining 4 A*s, 4As and 2 Bs and Ben 8As and 2 Bs. Currently in the Upper Sixth, Georgina hopes to study Mechanical Engineering at Cardiff, Bath or Loughborough while Ben, in the Lower Sixth, is aiming for Medicine at either Imperial or Kings College, London.

The scholarship includes a financial grant split over two years of the Sixth Form with the option to apply for additional funding through further education. Post university, both Georgina and Ben will take a three year short commission once passing through Sandhurst with the possibility of extending this to a longer commission depending on performance.

Lieutenant Colonel Dan Culley, Commanding Officer of Canfords CCF, was delighted for both cadets:

Working with very committed and talented senior cadets makes running the CCF at Canford hugely rewarding, but more importantly the benefit that all the cadets involved, junior and senior, get as a result of their input, is significant. The leadership and energy of cadets such as Georgina and Ben is inspirational and will undoubtedly carry them far. Both have been very engaged and high achieving members of our Combined Cadet Corps and I am very pleased that their talent has been recognised through the award of scholarships. I am sure they will both enjoy their time in the forces, and wish them every success.
