St John's Pupils Love Engineering

Published Monday 2nd of February 2015 01:54:12 PM

Year 6 was extremely lucky this week to visit WCM Europe in Chepstow. WCM Europe provides prototyping services to create concept metal and plastic parts quickly using 3D printing and CNC machinery like in the International Space Station. The Director of the Chepstow office, and one of St John's parents Mr Karl McGee, is very keen to promote interest in engineering with younger children and is offering scholarship assistance for any St John's student applying to senior schools. The children heard about famous engineers, watched a video about the creation process from design to production, and were trouped down to the CAD CAM room where they saw how 3D models are prepared for machining and printing. They saw the prototype designs turned into metal parts and were invited to enter a competition to design their very own car - the winner's design will be proudly printed on canvas and hung in the office. As they left the workshop, the children were delighted to find a DeLorean 'time machine', featured in the films Back to the Future, parked outside and took no time at all to jump in it. Once they were over their excitement they were treated to doughnuts and hot chocolate before they returned to School.
