Oakham student selected for Ivy League summer course

Published by Oakham School on Tuesday 3rd of February 2015

Oakham School Sixth Former Lucy Scott has been selected to take part in the Summer @ Brown course at the elite Brown University in Rhode Island, USA.

To apply, Lucy had to submit an essay detailing why she wanted to study in the US, as well as why she had decided to apply for the course, entitled 'Economic Growth and Development'. Lucy also had to provide an academic transcript, recording her school grades from Year 10 up until now, as proof of her academic abilities.

Lucy will travel to Rhode Island in July, and will spend 2 weeks living on the Brown University campus, to get an all-inclusive experience of life at an Ivy League university. She will spend at least 3 hours per day in lectures and seminars, where she will have the opportunity to meet university professors in the Economics department. As a rigorous academic course, Lucy will also have to submit essays and meet deadlines within the two-week period. Brown University organises trips for the students in their leisure time, so that they can get a chance to explore the local area as well.

Lucy said, 'I'm really excited to get a place on this programme. I wanted to get a flavour of American university system and this course deals with a subject that I'm really interested in, so it was perfect for me!'

Oakham School runs regular workshops specifically for students like Lucy who want to study in the US. Students meet every week under the guidance of Oakham's Yale Fellow Abby Walter, a recent graduate of Yale University. Topics covered in the sessions include preparing for the SAT exam, researching the best US universities to suit each student and getting ready for life in the US.
