Shanghai World Foreign Language School visits St John's

St John's-on-the-Hill enjoyed a visit from eleven World Foreign Language School pupils recently.

The World Foreign Language School is the premier school in Shanghai and the Chepstow School has built up close relationships to enable groups of Chinese children to visit the area, join in with the school's children and curriculum.

Headmaster Mr Nick Folland said 'The relationships the children build are great to see. Their staff also get to experience a different educational system and want to learn from it. This particular school wants to take key elements of the St John's teaching and learning styles back to China, as well as assessment and monitoring procedures.'

St John's also gains from the presence of these children to a significant degree. As has become tradition, after their two-week stay, the World Foreign Language students performed a farewell assembly. This incorporated modern and cultural dance routines, as well as the delivery of 'thank you' speeches in fluent English. One previous group conducted their farewell assembly in French, even though they don't study French in Shanghai, but because they had enjoyed some French lessons at St John's.

Mr Folland, said: 'There are such amazing opportunities for collaboration and learning between our two cultures. It has been great to be part of this initiative'.
