One Student: One Vote - Putting Democracy into Action

Published Thursday 17th of March 2011 09:34:09 AM

Friday 11th March was a very special day at Cobham Hall. Candidates for the new Student Leadership Team brought their election campaigns to a close and presented their applications before the whole school at the annual Guardian Convention.

The Guardian Convention is a major event in the school's calendar. As a Round Square school, democracy is an important part of school life. The school's Student Leadership Team is made up of the Guardian (the Head Girl), two Deputies and four House Captains. The team works closely with the Headmaster and senior members of staff, and they hold weekly meetings with students and organise regular opportunities for all the students to put forward ideas and raise concerns.

Candidates are required to submit a letter of application, supported by two written references, to the Headmaster. At the Convention, the each candidate's references are read to the assembled staff and students before the Headmaster invites her to address the Convention setting out her ideas for the coming year, introducing her chosen Deputy, and emphasising the personal qualities which she hopes will get her elected! The Headmaster then invites questions from staff and senior students. Good preparation and quick thinking are essential if the candidates are to acquit themselves well at this stage.

It is then the turn of candidates for House Captain to take the stage and make their presentations.

After the Convention, the candidates are taken out by the Headmaster for a well deserved lunch while the school turns to the serious business of voting. Ballot boxes and voting slips are provided for staff and students and scrutineers ensure that it is strictly 'one person, one vote'.

After all the votes were counted, the new Guardian was announced by the Headmaster. Isi Omo-Aligbe will be leading the Student Leadership Team for the coming year, supported by Lauren Bubb and Deshana Gunathilake.
