Canford School Colts triumph at Rugby 7s

The Colts returned to 7s action at the Canford tournament on Sunday 8th March where they were pitted against local rivals Bryanston in the group as well as facing Wellington School and Blundells. Blundells provided the stiffest challenge in the pool stage and Canford progressed as 2nd seeds into the Cup semi-final. Here they faced a highly fancied Beechen Cliff School, who had also progressed smoothly from their group having beaten Sherborne, KES and Taunton School. The Canford boys had already faced the same opponents in round 6 of the National XVs competition as Junior Colts and played a near faultless match to run out convincing 46-0 winners to go through to the final against Heathfield.

Heathfield and Canford had crossed swords at the Millfield tournament earlier in the term with Heathfield running out victors giving Canford a lesson in speed and direct running. Learning from that experience, Canford displayed a much improved 7s game this time. The Colts set their stall out early with a hanging restart that alllowed Pat Regan to challenge strongly in the air. From that moment the tone for the game was set. Canford used the width well and supporting from depth when team mates took on the Heathfield defensive line to take the lead in the match. As expected Heathfield fought back and produced a stunning try from under their own posts going the length of the field to keep the affair tight. Canford were not to be denied on this occasion and held on to lift the trophy on home soil after a strong squad contribution throughout the day. The boys can look forward to the group stage of Rosslyn Park with some confidence. A fantastic day's rugby.
