Oxbridge and Ivy League Offers for Canfordians

Published Tuesday 31st of March 2015 04:05:05 PM

To date our pupils have received an impressive 533 offers from top universities. Of these, over two thirds are from institutions in the Russell Group and when combined with offers from the top 14 non Russell Group organisations in the UK, they represent 80% of the total. At time of writing, 81 pupils were still awaiting decisions, mainly applications to Durham, Edinburgh and for Medicine and Dentistry courses.

Competition continues to be particularly fierce for places at Oxbridge, at US universities and to study Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry. Congratulations to the following pupils (a number pictured) who have gained offers in these areas:

Georgina Burrows - Natural Sciences, Cambridge; Julia Davis - Biomedical Sciences, Oxford; William Entwisle - Economics, Cambridge; Anna Hendry - Medicine, University College London; Joseph Holland - Michigan, US; Evgeny Moshkovich - Stanford, US (Ivy League); Jonathan Naylor - Princeton, US (Ivy League); George Rose - Medicine, Queen Mary's London; Kavita Shergill - Medicine, Cardiff; Charles Sims - Chemistry, Oxford; Rebecca Thomas - Veterinary Medicine, Bristol; Charlotte Thornton - Experimental Psychology, Oxford; Holly Twist - Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Cambridge.

Two Canfordians have won places on corporate training programmes - Ben Heyman to financial consultancy PWC, voted No 1 graduate employer in The Times Top 100 survey, and Aryan Sheikhalian to management consultancy Accenture. Twenty nine pupils have gained places on J.P. Morgan's 2015 summer placement scheme, while Georgina Dean and Benjamin Howard-Allen are celebrating Army scholarships which provide sponsorship through University and a three year minimum short service commission once passing through Sandhurst.

Michael Doherty, Head of Careers, commented:

"Despite the higher education marketplace being more competitive than ever, Canfordians continue to outperform the sector in terms of offers. According to UCAS 60% of applicants from the independent sector achieved places at high tariff universities last year, while consistently at least 80% of our offers are for these top ranking universities. Add to this places secured at Ivy League institutions in the US where competition is even more fierce only18 pupils from the UK were awarded places at Stanford last year, for example and the success rate is even more impressive. Diversity in terms of experience outside the classroom seems to be a distinct advantage in applications, and our developing programme of co-curricular activities should serve to further increase our pupils chances of success. We are also stepping up our links with the many subsidised education programmes offered by some of the largest and most successful corporates and increasing awareness for Canfordians of the growing diversity of Higher Education opportunities and alternatives both in the UK and further afield. We are committed to continuing the strength of links with organisations and individuals who can provide work experience, guidance and advice from a wide range of disciplines. We remain indebted to all those Old Canfordians, parents and colleagues who have offered invaluable support through our mentoring programme and through numerous visits and talks. These insights, coupled with the core experiences Canford provides, enable our pupils to approach their future choices with confidence and much better equipped to achieve highly."
