15-year-old Szymon Kaklin was recently crowned ACS Egham's Musician of the Year with his electric guitar piece 'Master of Puppets' by Metallica.

Altogether 37 ACS Egham students, aged 10 to 18, performed a range of music in front of an audience of students, parents and teachers, showcasing a variety of musical talents, from singing to saxophone, piano and guitar. The annual competition, now in its fifth year, included renditions of 'Let's Go Fly a Kite' and 'Summertime', with more classical pieces such as 'Greensleeves' also featuring.

Szymon, who lives locally in Englefield Green, commented on winning the title:

'I thought that Musician of the Year was only for classical music, but now I'm really glad I entered. Being passionate about music runs in my family and I'm looking forward to continuing music, electric guitar especially, both in and out of the classroom in the future.'

There were two additional prizes for students who won their categories, as well as High Commendation awards for four musicians who narrowly missed out on the top prize. The competition was adjudicated by John Heighway, the recently retired Deputy Principle of Trinity College of Music, who is Senior Lay Clerk of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Irina Walters, music coordinator at ACS Egham, commented:

'The competition was a real celebration of music. Each and every year the standard is raised higher and more students get involved. We are thrilled with the hard work the musicians have put in, alongside their parents and teachers.'
