First MSJ Bake Off Produces Delicious Results

Published Thursday 9th of April 2015 12:05:45 PM

On Saturday 28 February over 50 keen bakers from Years R to 8 headed into School for the first MSJ Bake Off. The contestants, working individually or in parent/daughter pairs, had been given a basic recipe (one of four) and would have 75 minutes to create their culinary masterpiece; adding to the basic recipe to create a unique bake.

The day got off to a super start with the cupcake bakers adding delicious surprises to their cake mix and decorating their cupcakes in a variety of imaginative ways - we had Cookie Monsters, beautiful intricate flowers, a Cupcake Garden and MSJ Cupcakes to name a few. Next to bake were the traybake group. As a mouthwatering smell of chocolate filled the air, these competitors worked hard to complete some stunning looking brownies adorned with strawberries, golden glitter and handmade dark chocolate hearts. The third wave of chefs baked biscuits, rolling two flavours together to create a swirl effect and a delicious mouthful and the final group produced their take on a classic Victoria Sponge.

While the competitors drank welcome cups of tea and ate the fruits of their labours, three esteemed judges worked hard in the adjacent room to judge the presentation bakes. Chris Doogan - MSJ Chef deliberated with Chris Morgan - Head Chef at L'Amuse Bouche at the Cotford Hotel and Mrs Woodhouse - Headmistress - to make the difficult decision. Category Winners were announced as - Cupcake: Emily Lymer (Year 1), Traybake: Isobel Advani (Year 4), Biscuits: Emily and Chloe Aris (Years 1 and 3) and Victoria Sponge: Charlotte Milne-Bennett (Year 5). Charlotte and her mother, Wendy, were also pronounced to be the overall winners of the event.

Thanks must go to all of the competitors for their generosity in agreeing to sell their bakes in aid of the MSJ Gambia Project - the event raised a fantastic total of 350 for this worthy cause.
