Outstanding Spring Term for Leweston's Sporting Stars

Published on isbi School News dated Wednesday 15th of April 2015

Leweston pupils have enjoyed another exceptional term competing in a wide array of sporting disciplines. Outstanding results have been generated in the sports of cross country, biathle/biathlon, triathlon, tennis, dressage, show jumping, rowing, swimming, rugby, hockey, netball and many more, with a number of girls representing both the school and the county at events around the UK.

One girl, Mollie P (Year 11), was a member of the victorious Dorset team in the Tennis County Cup held in Newport from February 27 - March 1, whilst another, Perdi D (Year 7), was recently presented with the Dorset Leading Junior Rider Award, which is given to the best under 16 year old show jumper riding ponies.

Other notable successes have been achieved by the school's biathletes and the Senior cross country team. A number of pupils have taken part in biathle/biathlon events this term, resulting in some outstanding achievements. One pupil, Elizabeth T (Year 9) was ranked as the world's top Under 14 biathlete in January, and more recently the school registered 5 team wins at the Dorset Schools' Biathle Relays, and took home medals for team gold and bronze (for the Under 17s and Under 12s respectively) at the prestigious National Schools' Biathlon Championships held at the Olympic Park in London at the end of March. 12 girls, ranging in age from 10-18, competed for Leweston at this hotly contested event and the school is immensely proud of the wonderful results produced by each of them.

The Senior cross country team has also had a tremendous season; since January, they have competed on the local circuit in 9 different competitions, winning 8 and finishing 2nd in the other. Victories were recorded at the Downside, Kingswood and Milton Abbey races, the Sherborne Trophy held in the Castle grounds, the Ken Baily races organised by Bryanston School, as well as the Clayesmore, King's Bruton and Bryanston Relays.

David Barlow, Head of Cross Country and Geography at Leweston commented, 'The girls should be proud of their determined, dedicated, and cheerful approach to both training and racing. They have been a pleasure to both guide and coach.'

With many events lined up for the summer term and a number of girls aiming to compete for Great Britain, it looks set to be a record breaking year for sport at Leweston.
