Irish rugby caps for St Benedicts boys

Two St Benedicts boys have won their Irish rugby caps this season: seventeen year old Dominic Gorard, who is in his Upper Sixth year at the school and Old Boy Cian Romaine.

Gorard represented the U18s on the wing, making his debut from the bench against Italy earlier in the year. He was then selected to play in the two matches against France and England at the beginning of April in the International Triangular Festival hosted at Hartpury. Ireland beat France 18-10 in their opening game and, with England also beating France 7 - 5, things were nicely set up for the decider between England and Ireland. In a very close and exciting match, Ireland were leading 11-8 with minutes to go. However, England managed to score in the final moments to win the match 13-11. Gorard played the full match and made a number of good runs, one just 2 metres short of the try line. He impressed the selectors with an excellent performance on the pitch on the final day.

Cian Romaine, who left St Benedicts in August 2013, won his first cap for Ireland at U20 level. Romaine, who is currently playing at lock for Connacht, made his debut from the bench against Italy and scored a try in very snowy conditions. Subsequently, he was selected to start in the March fixture against Wales at Colwyn Bay.
