Student artwork unveiled at ACS Cobham

From hip-hop montages to satirical oil paintings of politicians, 13 aspiring artists at ACS Cobham are displaying their artwork at an exhibition running until the end of the month, showcasing the results of their two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Art course.

Parents, teachers and students were invited to the exhibitions private viewing before Easter to celebrate the students achievements and hard work. Many of the artistic students are going to continue their art studies at universities across the UK.

The exhibiting students, aged 17 to 18, have spent the last two years building a portfolio which reflects their creative freedom. As part of the course, students complete open-ended assignments, designed to stimulate their individual artistic flair and to work with themes and ideas significant to them.

Student Austin Barnes, who is hoping to take a place at City and Guilds Foundation in Art and Design later this year, produced a body of work inspired by the late artist, Jean Michel Basquiat. 18-year-old Austin translated the narratives revealed by his favourite hip-hop artists into montages and collages of imagery, mixing figurative forms with layers of textured inks, paints and other media.

Emma Clayton, aged 18, was inspired by artists that use textiles in their work. She re-interpreted her own photographs as textile images, made with fabric and sewing.

The art exhibition was part of the students final exam, as photos of their artwork and workbook pages were submitted to the moderators of the IB for assessment.

Cyrus Iravani, Head of Visual Arts at ACS Cobham, commented:

The IB Art Exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for students, teachers, family and friends to admire and celebrate each students body of work. Our students produced an excellent exhibition to showcase their achievements and were excited about what the future holds for our talented artists.
