BMS student Sam Hosegood has made it through to the International Linguistics Olympiad final to be held in Bulgaria, in July 2015. His success in the first two rounds of the competition put him in the top 8% of young linguists nationally.

This year's Linguistics Olympiad, a national competition in which students attempt to decipher languages with which they are not familiar, included Finnish, Georgian and Murrinhpatha, an aboriginal Australian language.

On 04 February four Year 13 students took part in round one; Sam Hosegood, Richard Herbert, Josie Western and Rian Howe. Overall they achieved one gold award, two silvers and a bronze, putting the students in the top 35% nationally.

However, Year 13 student Sam Hosegood, who came in the top 16 out of a total of 1,400 candidates, was then invited to take part in the second round of the competition at Somerville College, Oxford, on 20-22 March. After an impressive performance Sam has made it to the International final, to be held in Bulgaria in July.

Sam said It was a really good experience to explore new languages; it was very challenging, but I think it was a great achievement to get through to the final round and Im excited about taking part.

Former student and OBM, Dr John Lowe, who is currently a research fellow in Linguistics at Christ Church College, Oxford, contacted Miss Jo Newton, Head of Classics to invite Bedford Modern School students to take part. Students met with Miss Newton for several weeks prior to the competition in order to prepare them for the complex questions set by university lecturers.

Jo Newton said Sam is a true all-rounder, as is evident from his choice of A level subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Further Maths and German. I am sure that this is what has given him the edge over so many other students. We are very lucky that students at BMS are able to explore a wide range of interests to such a high level.

We wish Sam the best of luck for the final!
