Culford's Spring Walk for Charity

To raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation, Culford held a Spring Walk in the glorious grounds of the school on Saturday 2 May.

In a break from marathon runs and sponsored swims, the Culford community raised over £650 in a more serene way, with more than fifty parents, children, staff, Old Culfordians and friends from the local community enjoying a stroll around the school's 480 acre estate. The walk finished at Culford Hall where everyone had the opportunity to buy homemade cakes, preserves and goodies, and take part in a charity raffle.

Culford parent, Mrs Nikki Howe, spoke movingly about her son, Oliver, being diagnosed with meningitis after his first year at university and spending several months at Addenbrooke's Hospital. Mrs Howe said 'I am really glad to have this opportunity to tell people about this disease and highlight the fact that it is not only babies and young children who contract meningitis, but it is increasingly common amongst teenagers. Recognising the signs, which are so similar to flu, and getting early hospital attention is critical.'

Fortunately Oliver has since made a full recovery and was able to take a break from his studies to join in the charity event at the weekend. The Meningitis Research Foundation provided information packs and display material to highlight the symptoms which tend to start with fever, vomiting, headache and feeling unwell. Sufferers may also have limb pain, pale skin, and cold hands and feet which often appear earlier than other symptoms, which may include a rash, neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights and confusion.

Culford were delighted to donate the money to The Meningitis Research Foundation, which invests in vital research into meningitis and septicaemia, as well as supporting those affected and providing free information to the public and health care professionals.

Culford: Charity Begins at School

Culford is proud to be a school known for its charitable giving. Events are organised by a pupil-led Charities Committee and include the Culford Charity Restaurant and Charity Fashion Show as well as many smaller events. Culford also supports two major overseas projects, in Malawi and in Nepal, with a group of Sixth Formers travelling to Malawi over three weeks every summer to carry out voluntary work.
