Published Tuesday 9th of June 2015 01:11:29 PM

Celebrating the enthusiasm and resilience of Oakhamians Students, parents, staff and Trustees from Oakham School joined together at Speech Day to share in the successes of the School community over the last year. The Headmaster outlined how proud he was of “the determination, enthusiasm and increasing resilience that Oakhamians display in their lives.” He stressed that whilst “each and every one of us has different talents and abilities that in themselves are no guarantee of success or happiness in life” and that “it is through effort and persistence that we do not just fulfil, but go far beyond our potential.” He then took some time to offer examples including: • Those students who had really challenged themselves, academically and intellectually – including Nicolò Nefri for having his IB Extended Essay presented at an academic conference at Oxford, Bob Cliffe for winning a place to represent the UK in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Indonesia, and students Erol Guvener and Will Butterworth for reaching the final of the Oxford and Cambridge Union Schools Debating Finals. • From a sporting perspective, there were a number of achievements that showed persistence and focused effort, including six of Oakham’s sports teams reaching national finals in netball, rugby, boys hockey and girls football. There were also over 60 pupils who received their Sports Colours at Speech Day. • The efforts and talents of Oakham’s creative artists, including three students who have won places to prestigious drama schools, members of the Concert Band whose performances have set even higher standards across the year, and Oakham’s artists who won five out of the six categories at the Rutland Young Artist Exhibition. He concluded that “this is a remarkable and a great school – I could not be prouder of each and every Oakhamian sitting here today. You have given all of us renewed energy and belief for the next chapter of the everlasting story of Oakham School – it is going to be a very exciting chapter indeed.” .
