Oakham’s sailors continue to ride on the crest of a wave, with their U18 and U16 1st teams coming out on top at the BSDRA Eastern Championships, held nearby at Rutland Water. The competition (run by the British Schools Dinghy Racing Association) saw Oakham’s U18 and U16 1st and 2nd teams go head to head amongst 18 other schools in a bid for victory and qualification for the national finals. The tournament came to a thrilling climax when the U18 1st team faced Royal Hospital School in the final, eventually beating them 2-0 to secure the regional title. The Oakham U16 1st team also won their competition convincingly. Both teams now go through to the national championships, held in West Kirby, Merseyside, at the end of June. This is the second year running they have won a place in the national championships, and the team is certainly looking forward to the challenge. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to really test themselves, as they’ll be competing against teams from across the world,” says Nick Neve, Oakham’s sailing coach. This week’s success is yet another accolade to add to the sailing team’s trophy cabinet. Oakham’s sailors have had an exceptional year; having excelled at the Feva World Sailing Championships held in Grosseto Italy, and won places to train with the RYA regional squads. They are now hoping to once again win the title of ‘top school’.
