Parents and students from the ACS Egham community recently took part in a 7km walk around Virginia Water Lake in support of StreetInvest, a non-profit organisation that supports children living on the streets. The StreetInvest Walkathon was organised by students at ACS Egham as part of the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) element of their International Baccalaureate Diploma, for which students must undertake volunteering or community work. The walk in conjunction with other fundraising initiatives raised just under £3000 for StreetInvest, which provides training to adults to enable them to mentor children who are living on the streets. The walk was followed by a relaxed picnic in the park. Lyndal Tonkies, CAS Coordinator commented: “Organising the Walkathon was a great opportunity for students to learn what planning such a big event entails and helps them learn the importance of advertising, planning ahead, communication and setting priorities.” Danai Aberg, age 16, is a student at ACS Egham and helped organise the Walkathon. She said: “Organising the Walkathon was great fun and gave us the opportunity to get involved in supporting a local charity and an important cause”.
