Ellesmere College students were celebrating the first results of the summer with the publication of the International Baccalaureate Diploma results. The diploma pass level of 24 points is given the equivalent value of BCC grades at A Level and 13 out of the 14 students completing this year achieved the full diploma and one achieved certification. Well over half of the cohort (58%) achieved more than 30 points, which is equivalent of A*AA grades at A Level. The International Baccalaureate Diploma was introduced at Ellesmere College in September 2006, as a challenging alternative to A Levels. Students who follow the International Baccalaureate course study six subjects, a course in The Theory of Knowledge, and produce a university standard Extended Essay as part of their assessment. It is a demanding course and highly rewarding, it is held in high esteem by universities. The IB Diploma opens doors to the top universities in both the UK and around the world. Universities value the course as an excellent preparation for university and for life. All of the students are to be congratulated on their achievements. There were a few notable performances that are worthy of further comment: Michal Zarzecki achieved the outstanding score of 43, which is only 2 points short of the 45 available that is only awarded to approximately 100 candidates across the world. 43 points equates to 4.8 A* grades at A level. Michal is planning to read Medicine, as is Max Assmann who achieved an equally impressive 42 points. Caspar Fritzen and Robert Blach achieved 35 points which is equivalent to 3.5 A* grades at A level. Robert also achieved two A grades for his Extended Essay and his Theory of Knowledge which are two additional components of the diploma. The Headmaster at Ellesmere College, Mr Brendan Wignall, commented on the hard work of all the students "I am delighted for our pupils who have done so well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. They have certainly worked very hard. All of our IB students will be exceptionally well prepared for university following the rigorous demands of this course. We look forward now to the publication of the A Level and GCSE results in August."
