Walking the corridors of power

Published by Oakham School on Monday 5th of October 2015

Oakham’s Sixth Form AS Politics students got an insight to the workings of the UK Parliament during an insightful trip to the Palace of Westminster and a Q&A session with their local MP. Oakham’s keen political scientists had a tour around Parliament, taking in the corridors of power within the Palace and seeing first-hand the inner workings of the House of Commons and House of Lords. Throughout, the students asked insightful questions and got involved in important discussions about the history and the politics of the British legislature. The local MP for Melton and Rutland, Sir Alan Duncan, was then available to take some probing questions from the Politics students. An interesting debate ensued on a range of issues, from Jeremy Corbyn’s policies to how to tackle the migrant crisis. Students were extremely grateful for Sir Alan’s account of life within the Parliamentary system, and they were all enthused by the debates on the topical and controversial issues of the day.
