Many congratulations to Canfordian Samuel Hopkins who has been offered a place in the double bass section of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for the second consecutive year. By taking up the challenge and privilege of becoming an NYO Musician Samuel is part of a tradition which has included many of Britain's greatest instrumentalists, conductors and composers. According to the NYO, the competition for seats this year was greater than ever before, with over 600 young musicians aged up to 19 auditioning. Samuel is in the Fifth Form and currently aged 15 which makes his achievement even more notable. NYO tutors commented: “We were impressed by Samuel’s playing and ensemble skills, by his potential to carry on improving, as well as by his potential to make a significant contribution to everything NYO does.” During the course of the year will be three NYO residencies, which offer total immersion in orchestral music-making, including creative workshops and preparation techniques designed to help realise the full potential of the orchestral musicians. NYO Residencies lead directly into a concert tour which tackles the most demanding repertoire, playing under some of the world's finest conductors and alongside the world’s best soloists in the most prestigious venues in the UK.
