Books, Bodyguards and Samurais at Culford School Author Visit

Culford Prep and Senior pupils were wowed by an author visit with a difference last week, when Chris Bradford, best-selling children’s author of the ‘Young Samurai’ and ‘Bodyguard’ series, treated them to a live samurai sword demonstration and interactive bodyguard training mission. The children, aged 9 to 13, began by watching the author read and act out parts from his action packed series. He then told them about how, in preparation to write his Samurai books, he trained in iaido (samurai swordmanship), karate, and earned his black belt in Zen Kyu Shin Taijutsu, and for his new bodyguard series embarked on an intensive close protection course to become a qualified professional bodyguard which included unarmed combat, defensive driving, and surveillance training. Much to the children’s surprise, Chris had in fact set up a secret camera in the hall, but two particularly observant Senior school pupils found it before the talk started; the first ever to spot it according to Chris! He then revealed the front cover to his new book ‘Target’, and gave a book signing for the pupils, with each receiving a book to take home. This visit was four years in the making for school librarian Lesley Martin, who is always thinking of new ways to encourage students to read and enjoy reading: “Chris’ visit was well worth the wait; it’s not often an author arrives with a sword! The children loved it, and it was great for them to hear an author so passionate about their work, and to see that books certainly aren’t boring.”
