Mayfield's magical Live Crib draws near! 8 - 10 December 2015

Published Tuesday 1st of December 2015 02:07:40 PM

Mayfield School is home to the unique tradition of Live Crib – performed by the pupils and starring both a real baby and donkey, it is believed to be the only nativity of its kind in England. Now well into its fifth decade, this year’s Live Crib is open to the public on the 8, 9 and 10 December. Each evening begins with Mary and Joseph’s journey down the village High Street, guiding the donkey and accompanied by a procession of candle-lit angels (the School choir) singing carols. Turned away at the Middle House Inn, the procession winds its way to the School’s 14th-century Chapel. With the infant Jesus cradled in their arms, sometimes behaving angelically, other times less so, Mary and Joseph sit at the foot of the altar, with angels perched all around on the Chapel’s gothic window sills. The nativity then unfolds, with the Archangel Gabriel singing from the gallery and Balthasar, Caspar and Melchior – better known as the three wise men – visiting Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
