Percussion masterclass with Welsh National Opera musician

Published Wednesday 9th of December 2015 11:49:16 AM

Pat King, timpani player in the Welsh National Opera and teacher at The Royal College of Music and Drama joined the Music department to host a percussion masterclass for visitors and pupils. Pat King and two of his students opened the event with an interactive demonstration on the bongos and drums. Pat also took the opportunity to offer feedback and helpful tips to all the day’s performers. Millfield Prep OM and current Upper Sixth pupil, Matilda McCrumb joined the class and played part of a timpani piece which she is using to audition for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Other former and current pupils performed pieces on the timpani and xylophone. Laura Borenstein, Director of Music commented; “We are encouraging pupils to explore their musical talents and to experiment with the experience of performance. By welcoming Pat King, we have a wonderful opportunity to give children access to professional feedback and learning opportunities outside of a typical lesson environment.” To round off a very successful day, the Senior and the Prep School percussion ensembles played a piece each, which they have been learning since the beginning of term. Our visiting musicians from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama gave a dramatic ensemble performance.
