County and Regional Success for Canford

Published Tuesday 15th of December 2015 10:23:21 AM

It has been another excellent term of sport at Canford School. All three Netball teams – U19s, U16s and U14s – are through to the Regionals, the U14 girls’ Hockey team are West of England champions while the Colts Rugby side are County champions for the second consecutive year. U18 and U16 girls’ Hockey teams also made it through to the County finals, narrowly missing out on success at regional level. The U19s secured wins against Poole High, Woodroffe and Sherborne to come runners up in their County competition. The U16s went one better to become overall County champions after winning 2-1 against BGS in the semis and 10-2 v Sherborne in the final, as did the U14s who are also County winners after beating Sherborne 11-1 in the semis and Parkstone 11-8 in the final. All three move through to the Regional championships in Cornwall on 30th January 2016. In Hockey, the U14As had a tremendous season taking both the County and West titles to secure their place at the National Finals which take place in March at the Olympic Hockey park. Winning through to the West final without conceding a goal against Cheltenham, Helston, Guernsey Ladies, Marlborough, Blundell’s and King’s Taunton, they faced a strong Dean Close side which resulted in a draw 1-1 at full time. The final was decided in a nail biting penalty strokes decider, with Canford eventually victorious 3-2. The U16As meanwhile won through to the West prelims as County runners up, but unfortunately just missed out on the full West tournament after losing to Millfield. The U18s meanwhile took the County title impressively but narrowly lost out at the West prelims on goal difference after a three way tie. Finally the Colts A Rugby side had an excellent season, including wins against Portsmouth Grammar 50-0, Millfield 32-24, Hampton 15-7, Dauntsey’s 31-7, Bryanston 29-5 and Marlborough 28-7. They crowned this achievement becoming County champions – the second consecutive year for Canford’s U16s - after a comfortable win 43-14 against Sherborne. Director of Sport Mark Burley was delighted with these high achievements: “With over 350 matches, regattas and galas over the course of the term, and over 2/3 of the school involved in competitive match play on Saturdays, it has certainly been a very busy and highly successful term at all sporting levels Many congratulations to all the Canfordians who have contributed to these fine sporting achievements against strong sides at both school fixture, county and regional matches.”
