Oxbridge Success for Oakham Students

Published by Oakham School on Friday 22nd of January 2016

After months of applications and anticipation, 12 Oakham students are now celebrating after receiving offers to study at either Oxford or Cambridge University, two of the world’s most prestigious institutions. “We are all incredibly proud of the number of students who have received Oxbridge offers this year,” says Headmaster Nigel Lashbrook. “All of them have worked incredibly hard to stand out amongst fierce competition from thousands of other students across the UK and, indeed, the rest of the world. Oxford and Cambridge are looking for truly exceptional candidates who are passionate about their respective subjects, and I’m delighted that so many Oakham students exemplify these qualities.” The students have received offers for a wide range of courses, from Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, to English and Classics. “This certainly shows the range of interests and aptitudes of our students,” says Darren Sheppard, Oakham’s Senior Academic Mentor. “It’s been a pleasure to work with all of the Oxbridge candidates; to help them with their applications and personal statements, as well as ensuring that they are prepared for their admissions tests and interviews. It is an impressive achievement to have been offered an Oxbridge place, and I am now looking forward to working with more students over the coming years.” Cambridge has offered eight places to Oakham School students including Ellie Loxton, who will be reading English at St Catherine’s College. Max Jones and Quincy Lin will both be reading Natural Sciences, at Queens’ College and Downing College respectively. Nick Hartley has been offered a place to read Psychology & Behavioural Sciences at Robinson College, whilst Haolin Hou has been offered a place to read Computer Science at Sidney Sussex College. Lorenzo Niccolini will be reading Mathematics at Jesus College, and Anna Gonzalez will be reading Classics at Pembroke College. Old Oakhamian Arthur Leichthammer will be reading Human, Social and Political Sciences at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Arthur was one of two Oakham students who achieved the incredible feat of gaining the full 45 points in his IB Diploma, an accolade achieved by only approximately 0.3% of students from across the world. Oxford have offered four places to Oakham School students including Will Alexander and Tim Stuart, both of whom will be studying Engineering at Wadham College and St Hugh’s College respectively. Leon Guerrero has been offered a place to read Physics at Lady Margaret Hall, whilst Claudia Green will be reading English at Exeter College.
