Bedford Modern School student Rachel Radley, Year 12, was installed as a cadet selected to support Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis, at a formal ceremony on Wednesday 20 January at the Woburn Hotel. Every year, the Lord-Lieutenant appoints a small number of young people to support them in their duties. This year one cadet was selected from each of the following cadet forces across Bedfordshire: Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Sea Cadets, Police Cadets, Fire Cadets, Army Cadet Force (ACF) and Air Training Corps (ATC). Assisting the Lord-Lieutenant with her civic duties as required during 2016, the young people are occasionally on parade for royal visits and act as ambassadors for their organisations and the youth of Bedfordshire. Rachel has been involved in the CCF since Year 9 and has reached the rank of Cadet Flight Sergeant in the RAF section. She reflected on her appointment saying: “I feel extremely honoured and proud to be representing the school. I’m really looking forward to all the events I’ll be attending and the new people I’ll get to meet, it’s a really exciting opportunity for me.” Steve Harvey, CCF Contingent Commander at Bedford Modern School also attended the special occasion and commented: “Since joining the CCF, Rachel has showed herself to be a highly committed and self-reliant leader. She took over the leadership of the RAF section when she was in Year 11 and has set the highest personal standards for her cadets. She richly deserves this highly sought after and prestigious position.” Rachel continues to balance her cadet work with her studies and hopes to study medicine at university.
