Renowned wordsmiths, Beverley Naidoo and Niall de Burca, both visited ACS Cobham International School recently, delivering inspirational workshops and lectures to students of all ages. Award-winning children’s author, Beverley Naidoo, delivered a special presentation to ACS Cobham Middle School students about The Other Side of the Truth, the novel that won her the Carnegie Medal. As part of the interactive workshop, Beverley was interviewed by a group of students who discussed writing and her personal experiences in an informal setting. As part of the visit, Beverley also gave a lecture describing her experience of living under apartheid in South Africa. Discussing her subsequent exile to England, where she began writing about her experiences, Beverley encouraged students to consider the context that surrounds her novels and the link between personal experience and writing. ACS Cobham also welcomed world-renowned Irish storyteller, Niall de Burca, to deliver a series of captivating storytelling performances and workshops. Internationally recognised for his energetic and animated style of storytelling, he performed two Shakespeare texts, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, bringing the curriculum to life for the 11 to 13-year-olds. Niall also gave a workshop to high school International Baccalaureate students that explored the influence of language on storytelling. Middle School Librarian, Anne Hollyfield, commented: “These visits were a wonderful opportunity for students to see the texts they are studying come to life. They were captivated by Niall’s lively storytelling and inspired by how Beverley’s experiences have shaped her books.”
