ACS Egham International School recently hosted renowned cellist, Laura Van Der Heijden, Winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012 at the age of 15, and her accompanist, Petr Limonov, for an evening recital. Laura and Petr performed in ACS Egham’s Mansion Assembly Room, playing four pieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Janáček and Prokofiev, as well as an encore piece by Skryabin. The concert, attended by students, staff and parents as well as the wider community, marked the culmination of a set of high profile concerts which have taken place during this academic year at the school. Members of the audience were given the opportunity to ask Laura and Petr questions at the end of the recital, enabling them to discover more about Laura’s journey and Petr’s musical experiences. Laura is currently spending a gap year dedicated to the cello, and will be beginning the start of her Bachelor’s Degree in Music at St John’s College, Cambridge, this September 2016. Irina Walters, ACS Egham Music teacher, commented: “Both Laura and Petr are fantastic musicians. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to their exceptionally high quality music making, and, indeed, ‘pinched’ myself that the concert was taking place at our school. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and were left inspired by the performers’ incredible talent and determination to succeed.”
