Summer sunshine greeted Culford’s annual Speech Day on Saturday 28 May. The Guest of Honour was Rev Canon Richard Norburn MBE, President of St Nicholas Hospice Care, who presented the prizes and made a speech to the 600 assembled guests. This red-letter day celebrates Culford Senior School pupils’ achievements and showcases their work and the huge variety of extra-curricular activities which they participate in. The day included a drama performance of The Female of the Species, a topical debate on “This House believes Britain should leave the EU”, a superb instrumental and vocal concert and academic displays of work in Culford’s stunning new £2.2million Library, which opened in September 2015. Outside, guests were able to watch the President’s XI play cricket against the school, enjoy a tennis demonstration by the talented Academy players and participate in a golf competition with Culford’s PGA professional and Director of Golf, Lawrence Dodd. Rev Canon Norburn has been involved with the Hospice since he chaired the first planning group and became President in 1987. After the prize giving, Canon Norburn spoke about the early days of the Hospice and how it came into being; above all, he urged the young people in the audience to make the most of all opportunities which present themselves. The Headmaster, Julian Johnson-Munday, said: “It was an honour to welcome Richard and his wife, Joyce, to Culford. They have worked tirelessly for the benefit of the local community and Richard has made a lasting impact, not least by founding the Hospice, which is clearly a very special place, offering exceptional support to individuals, their families and friends at very difficult times in their lives.” The formal part of the day ended with section attack demonstrations by Culford’s CCF followed by a traditional strawberries and cream tea on the glorious South Front of Culford Hall.
