British Schools' Modern Biathlon Success

Athletic schoolgirl Harriet Hillman has put herself in the record books by becoming a British Schools Modern Biathlon Champion. Harriet,10, who is a pupil at St Margaret’s Preparatory School, Calne, was one of ten children from the school who took part in the competition at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre after qualifying in earlier rounds. She took first place in the 800 metres in a very quick time of 2.40.94 mins and then also did well in the swim to secure the U10 Girls British Schools Modern Biathlon title, beating 103 other competitors in the final. The following day Jonty Manners-Bell, 9, was the pick of the St Margaret’s boys, coming 49th overall, but with the fastest 50 metre swim nationally in a time of 34.64 secs, beating 88 other boys in the final. St Margaret’s PE teacher Sophy Smith said: ‘I am so proud of all the pupils who took part, with each of them achieving personal goals, and what a phenomenal performance from Harriet and Jonty on their first place successes.’
