Canford Rowers win Bronze at National Finals

Published Wednesday 8th of June 2016 04:07:56 PM

The sun shone the whole weekend as a total of 5,253 rowers from 153 clubs and schools took part in the National Schools Regatta at Dorney Lake over the three days from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th May 2016. Canford’s 12 crews made up of 58 pupils had a hugely successful weekend, both in terms of the races they won and the experience they gained at this National event. Special mention must go to the Senior Girls’ coxed Four and our J14B Girls coxed Quad. Both of these crews made it through to the A finals and brought home bronze medals. This was a fantastic result against school and club crews from across the UK, many of which row regularly on the Thames and other longer stretches of water than the Stour. Among other results, the J14 Boys’ Quad came 16th in the country, the J15 boys Quad won their C final to come 13th, the J15 girls Eight came 12th and the J16 Boys’ Quad came 17th overall. In the prestigious senior Boys’ coxless pair, Angus Robson and Sam Radvan stormed to 6th place in the A final which was a truly impressive achievement. Head Coach Ian Dryden commented: “It is always the icing on the cake to come away with medals at National championships, but we also cannot underestimate how valuable this event is an experience and inspiration to our young rowers. They learned a great deal from the races and will take this forward to the forthcoming regattas and to Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta qualifying. Thank you as ever to the Boat Club and Canford grounds staff, and to the Friends of Canford Rowing.” For press enquiries: marketing@canford.com
