Golf professional John Hoskison delivered a powerful and inspirational talk to St Swithun's Sixth Form General Studies students.
As a respected top golfer for over twenty years John played alongside Nick Faldo and Sandy Lyle. Following a match in 1994 a decision to accept a drink and then drive home changed John's life forever: he hit and killed a cyclist.
Sentenced to prison for three years, but with the forgiveness of his victim's widow, John was able to reflect and use this forgiveness to move forward positively, enabling him to endure the hostile prison environment and find empathy with prisoners caught up in the system due to particular circumstances.
John went on to write a book about his experience, currently writes Golf features for an online magazine and once again plays top level golf on the European Seniors Tour.
Within his talk John highlighted the strength of this positive attitude and how lessons learned in a sporting environment can be used within all aspects of life. His final words focused on the importance of having the ability and confidence to say 'no' and stick to what your conscience tells you.
Laura Chan, Lower Sixth student said 'John's talk took us from the wonders of professional golf to the horrors of prison, teaching us many lessons on the way. I look forward to reading his book.'
