Oakham School is celebrating its 15th year of world-leading IB Diploma exam results! Yet again the School’s results place them amongst the highest scoring IB students across the world – with students achieving an average point score of 36.9 – well above the international average of 30.2. Oakham’s results are incredibly impressive, with half of all students who took the IB Diploma at Oakham achieving 38 or more points – which is the equivalent to 5 As at A-level. Almost a quarter of students achieved 40 or more points – a total of 14 students who achieved the equivalent, or more than, 4 A*s at A-level! They included Konrad Hoppe, a boarding student who achieved 44 points and plans to study Medicine in Germany, four students who were each awarded 43 points, and Helen Ainsley, a day student who achieved 42 points to secure her place to study Politics & International Relations at the London School of Economics. “Oakham has 15 years of success in offering the IB Diploma to its students,” says Headmaster Nigel Lashbrook. “That’s 15 years of world-leading results – with students regularly achieving the feat of being awarded full marks, and with our average point score consistently being much higher than the international average. It’s a phenomenal achievement of which I am hugely proud.” Nigel continues, “Over the last 15 years, we’ve educated over 800 IB Diploma students. They have left Oakham armed, not only with an internationally well-regarded qualification, but also a highly sought-after set of skills and attributes that only studying the Diploma brings. The IB develops international mindedness, questioning, and tolerance – all qualities that are vitally important in today’s politically turbulent times, and certainly in the years ahead. Those students who learnt their exam results today join all IB Diploma students across the world in sharing an international mindset and qualification of which they should be justifiably proud.” Oakham’s IB Diploma students have won places at leading universities across the UK and the rest of the world – including courses in Law, Medicine, Business, Science, Politics and Architecture, at institutes including the London School of Economics, the University of California (UCLA), St Andrews, Durham, Exeter and University College London. “It’s fantastic to see where our IB Diploma students are moving on to, following today’s results,” says Head of Upper School, Simone Lorenz-Weir. “There is often a misconception that the IB Diploma doesn’t suit those students who want to specialise, or to follow careers in Science or Medicine. From our experience, IB students are in huge demand at universities across the UK – because of its rigour, its distance from all the political tinkering with A-levels, and for the skills it instills – particularly those of independent learning and critical thinking.” Results summary: • Average points score of 36.9, compared with the worldwide average of 30.2. • The equivalent pass rate, to A*–B grades at A-level, is an impressive 96%. • Almost a quarter of students (23.3%) gained 40 or more points (equivalent to 4 A*s at A-level). • 50% gained 38 or more points (equivalent to 5 As at A-level). • 81.7% gained 34 or more points (equivalent to A, A, B at A-level). • 100% pass rate.
