Four Culford Teams have placed in the top ten of the LTA National Tennis Championships, which took place from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 July in Hertfordshire. Culford were the only school to have four teams represented at this tournament; the first time in the history of the cups that this has been achieved. The Boys A team of Will Davies, Joe Tyler, Freddie Grant and Oscar Cutting justified their top four seeding and reached the semi-finals, playing against Reed’s School, reigning champions of the last nine years. After a close defeat, the team entered a 3rd/4th play-off against Merchiston College, winning 8-4 and claiming 3rd place, Culford’s highest ever finish in the boys’ event. Culford’s Girls A team also reached the semi-finals with ease to set up a match against Talbot Heath, Bournemouth, the number two seeds. Although the team of Lizzie Pam, Kira Reuter, Maria Andrews, Emily Sim and Kylie Bilchev played well they lost 10-2 and battled for 3rd place against Cheam High School. The girls narrowly missed out with a score of 7-6 and took 4th place, a great result. The Boys B team of Ed Pomeroy, Charlie James, Harry Wendelken, Karim Najia and Tom Belton, placed 6th overall, defeating number four seeds Cheam High School before being defeated 7-6 in their final match. The Girls B team were outstanding for such a young team which includes three Prep School pupils. Well done to Jana Higazy, Millie-Mae Matthews, Abby Taylor, Laurie Cruickshank and Marie Owino for placing 10th overall. David Hall, Director of Tennis is delighted with the final positions. He said: “The players were magnificent and performed superbly. They were a credit to Culford both on and off the court and created a huge presence over the weekend. We feel that the final positions accurately reflect the progress we have made when comparing ourselves to the best schools in Great Britain.”
