Culford’s Record Year at IAPS National Prep School Tennis Championships

Ten Culford Prep School pupils travelled to Millfield School to compete in this year’s IAPS National Tennis Championships, leaving with 5 National titles between them out of the 6 events they entered; Culford’s most successful year at the competition to date. Jana Higazy (13) and Millie-Mae Matthews (13) both reached the 14 and under girls’ singles final, making it an all Culford final. The standard of tennis from both girls was high, but Jana’s aggressive play just edged the match 6-4 in her favour. However, both girls came together to compete in the 14 and under girls’ doubles to emerge victorious in decisive fashion, producing a superbly controlled performance. In the 14 and under boys’ singles Matthew Gedney (13) won the title; a very impressive result. In the doubles event, he teamed with Luke Watson (13), meeting fellow pupils Seb Koci-Edwards (13) and Mason Bickers (13), in the quarter finals. With both pairs on top form, Matthew and Luke went through to the final. A tense match was played out against a strong duo from Dumpton Prep School, but the boys held their nerve to win 6-4. Ralph Bartlett (11), playing some superb attacking tennis in the 12 and under boys’ singles, reached the final, and with the support from staff and fellow players, produced a highly accomplished performance gaining another Culford National title. David Hall, Director of Tennis, was delighted with this record haul of trophies. He said: “What an amazing day of success for Culford, picking up 5 National titles out of the 6 events we entered. This is our most successful year ever. I am so pleased for all the players who have performed magnificently and were a real credit to the school. We have now won 16 National IAPS titles in 9 years.”
