Badminton School has come third in the national finals of the St John's Ambulance First Aid Competition 2011, competing against 12 schools in each category at the Natural History Museum in London, yesterday, Wednesday 29 June 2011. Year 9 pupil Irene, who was the team's reserve, was the winner of the national individual award and the award for pairs was awarded to Joanna and Justine, also in Year 9.

The competition challenges the girls to undertake first aid in a series of realistic, emergency scenarios and is designed to test the girls' knowledge and skills, quick thinking and the ability to act calmly in a crisis. The Badminton team (Claire, Ian, Joanna, Justine and Irene) dealt with a major head bleeding incident involving an unconscious casualty suffering from a head fracture. Joanna and Justine, the pairs, had to act quickly and work together on an incidence of alcohol poisoning and Irene excelled when she calmly dealt with a case involving severe burns.

The National School's First Aid Competition provides young people in schools the opportunity to practise their first aid skills in a realistic, fun and active manner. This year's pupils at Badminton have been trained by Head of Chemistry Barry Wharton and three Year 11 Badminton girls - Sophie Brown, Dabin Kwon and Harriet Taylor - who were the winners of the 2009 National Championship.

Said Badminton Headmistress, Jan Scarrow: 'I am delighted that the girls have reached the National First Aid Championships and have the opportunity to compete and test their skills in the national arena. This competition helps the girls learn extremely valuable lessons that they can build on for the rest of their lives such as working under pressure and reacting calmly in a crisis. It is also very heart warming to see older girls helping inspire younger girls in the school and the interaction between year groups is very much one of the schools' strengths.'
