Courage, resilience and failing well - Education guru, Lance King, brings the Art of Learning to ACS Egham students, teachers and parents

Lance King, a principal designer of the ‘Approaches to Learning’ (ATL) framework for the International Baccalaureate (IB), recently visited ACS Egham International School to deliver insightful presentations to students, teachers and parents including how to ‘fail well’ and pick yourself up when things don’t go to plan. Lance delivers programmes on the ‘Art of Learning’ worldwide, with more than 200,000 students having been through his courses. ACS Egham students aged 13 had a full day’s course on ‘Learning about Learning’, where Lance emphasised the importance of ‘failing well’. He taught how to acknowledge failures and take responsibility for actions, work out what went wrong, how to make changes and the importance of trying again. Underpinning this approach is a fundamental belief that learning to fail well actually produces academic success. For teaching staff, Lance ran a seminar on the IB ATL framework, which encompasses five approaches to learning skills – thinking skills, communication skills, social skills, self-management skills and research skills. The IB encourages teachers to design learning around the ATL skills, which help develop students into self-regulated learners. Caroline Hazel, IB Middle Years Programme Coordinator at ACS Egham International School, commented: “It was very useful to hear how we can design learning experiences that utilise ATL skills, and to learn the best methods of ensuring our students persevere when the going is tough. Lance’s expertise on effective IB teaching and learning strategies is invaluable.” For parents, Lance ran a seminar on ‘Courage, Resilience and Failing Well’, teaching parents how to get involved effectively with their own children’s learning. He focused on how they can support their children to be resilient through failure, learn from the experience and, ultimately, by trying again, how they can help themselves achieve greater success at school.
