Music Scholar to Star in Recital

Published Thursday 8th of December 2016 12:13:03 PM

On Tuesday 13 December, Music Scholar Catherine Howells (L5) will be playing her DipABRSM diploma recital in preparation for her exam at the end of term. This will be held in the Billiard Room at 1.30pm, which all are warmly invited to attend. Peter Burge, Director of Music, said: “This is a stunning achievement and her recital promises to be a truly memorable thirty minutes of exceptional musicianship.’ Catherine’s recital will include Beethoven: Sonata No 3 in A major, Op 69 – 1st Movement. This was written between 1806 and 1808 and is in typical classical sonata form. The piece begins with unaccompanied cello playing the first theme of the exposition which was unusual for this time period and stressed the importance of the cello in the sonata. Moving on, she will play Dvorak: Rondo in G minor, Op 94 which was composed in December 1891. The next piece will be Ian Venables: Elegy for Cello and Piano Op 2. The elegy starts with a dramatic theme with dissonant chords on the piano. This is then taken up by the cello which goes on to play large leaps of dissonant intervals. To finish, Catherine will play Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor Op 85 – 1st and 2nd Movements. The movements of this piece are written in pairs. Both the first and second movements start with three chords, in the first movement bowed and in the second plucked. This is then followed, in both, by a cello recitative. Outside of Culford, Catherine is currently the Principal Cello at Suffolk Youth Orchestra, the Principal Obo of West Suffolk Youth Orchestra and a Scholar at the Guildhall, fitting all of this around her school work and exams.
