Nearly New Shop Supports Pupil’s Trip to Malawi

Published Monday 30th of January 2017 02:02:38 PM

Since July 2009, a group of Culford Lower Sixth pupils and teachers have travelled to Malawi for three weeks to carry out voluntary work. The pupils have built classrooms and teachers’ accommodation at two village schools, provided materials and resources for several children’s homes and visited other projects funded by the money raised by pupils in previous years. Andrew Deane, Head of Modern Languages, taught in Malawi for a number of years before coming to Culford. His experience of Malawian culture and politics has enabled Culford to build strong links with one of the poorest developing countries in the world. Pupils are required to fundraise throughout the year before their trip in July. One of the ways to do this is through the Nearly New Shop (NNS), which sells a selection of used Culford branded uniform and sports items. For the Academic year 2015-2016, the NNS raised £3000 for Malawi projects from profits of uniform sales. 10 Malawi-bound pupils and two Duke of Edinburgh Gold pupils volunteered to keep the shop running most days of the week, including Saturdays. This has continued into the current Academic year with eight pupils currently helping out. The money raised went directly to the projects that pupils and staff worked on last July. Pupils will continue to develop these in July 2017 when they return. The projects include: Good News Orphanage provision for solar powered lighting in their library Project My Girl – purchase of educational resources and washable sanitary pads Nankhufi School – donation to their library building project 2017 Woodland Project – purchase of eco-stoves to encourage local communities to turn their back on deforestation Woodland Project – purchase of saplings to help Lower Shire Valley reforestation scheme Many thanks to Carolyn Scott, Craig Rushforth, and their families for their superb organisation, stock-taking, communications, training and amazing voluntary contributions of time to make the NNS what it is today.
