Published Monday 4th of September 2017 10:13:15 AM

Bromsgrove’s 220 Upper Sixth leavers took in total 733 subject qualifications this year. Overall more than a quarter of all results achieved the equivalent of an A* and just over three-fifths achieved at least an A grade. The A*- B percentage achieved is 80% (IB, BTEC and EPQ included). Six pupils achieved more than five A grades, twenty achieved four or more A grades with 43 gaining at least three A grades. Notable amongst these is Oscar Chou with four A*s and a further three A grades. This year’s International Baccalaureate Diploma results were once again superb with an average score of 39.1 points, the School’s highest ever IB average. 49% of our 43 candidates achieving 40 points or above and in Higher Level subjects, 45% of entries scored a 7 (equivalent to an A* at A level), whilst the equivalent A*/A rate was 88%. Of the 43 IB graduates, 16 nationalities were represented in the cohort (11 from the UK, 7 Germany, 6 Russia, 3 China, 3 Romania, 2 Ukraine, 2 Nigeria, 1 from Thailand, Spain, Portugal, Lithuania, Japan, Italy, France, Bulgaria and the USA). In September we will have 120 pupils studying the IB. A small number of our Sixth Form pupils study BTECs in Business Studies and Sport (often together with A levels). This year 52 Distinction *s were achieved (equivalent to an A* at A level) with a further 8 Distinctions (equivalent to an A level A grade) out of a total entry of 62. As part of their Sixth Form studies three quarters of the year group undertook significant enriching personalised study in terms of either the IB Core or the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). IB students averaged 2.1 Core points whilst 65 A*s were gained in the EPQ. All students holding offers from Oxbridge met their offers and the university destinations of leavers include an impressive list of top world and UK universities with pupils winning scholarships to NYU in Abu Dhabi (Academic Scholarship), the University of British Columbia (International Leader of Tomorrow Award) and the University of Mount Olive (International Scholarship). Bromsgrove’s Fifth Form have today achieved a strong set of GCSE results which are amongst the School’s best. 36% of the total grades achieved were graded A*, representing Bromsgrove’s highest ever A* result at the very top end. 60% of results were graded A*/A, also amongst the best results a Fifth form cohort has achieved, and the A*/B rate of 83.5% was on a par with the strong performances the School has come to expect in recent years. Academic excellence but not at the expense of breadth. Bromsgrove students continue to enjoy an enriching extra-curricular programme. For the last four years the School has been ranked in the top 5 of all schools nationally for the strength of its Senior School Sport over 26 sports as measured by School Sport Magazine. Twice in the last decade the School have been national debating champions of the EU Youth Parliament competition and have gone on to represent England. There is an enthusiastic Young Enterprise Group and Targets 2.0 club whilst others participate in the Schools’ based Model United Nations initiative. In addition to the enormous activities programme, approximately 300 students are currently involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. We now eagerly await the opening this term of our state of the art Music School, Concert Hall and Performing Arts Centre.
