Jim Culbert, Head of Physics at King Edward’s Witley has been promoted to extend his role to become Head of Science working across the entire school. Commenting on the new role, Mr Culbert says, “I am keen to continue the excellent work that is already in place which allows us to bring all science studies to life, complementing traditional learning with a range of interactive experiences. These include the ongoing development of our unique Café Scientifique initiative, which invites guest speakers to visit the School and share their knowledge and expertise with the pupils. Past speakers have included engineers, vets and chemists. Not only are we able to use our own environment for scientific study of the local woodland habitat, in addition, we regularly take our pupils out of the school environment to attend special lectures at the Institute of Education, as well as developing school trips to sites of specific scientific interest e.g. Brooklands Museum, the birthplace of motorsport and aviation, Marwell Zoo operated by Marwell Wildlife, a world-renowned charity leading conservation programmes in the UK and Africa. It is this rich curriculum, witnessed both in and out of the classroom that I will be looking to uphold and ideally amplify.” Mr Culbert, who joined King Edward’s in 1993, originally as a Physics teacher is a former graduate of University College in Cork, Ireland where he studied for a BSc Science. After graduating he worked for four years at an independent day school in Surrey before returning to Cork to take a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Sciences. A former Assistant Housemaster at King Edward’s, a role which sat alongside his teaching responsibilities, Mr Culbert has also been pivotal to the implementation of the School’s highly successful Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme (DoE). The promotion to Head of Science will see Mr Culbert assuming responsibility for the teaching of all science in the school, working as part of a team comprising three individual heads of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. He continues as Head of Physics and will teach pupils following the IGCSE, A-level and IB science courses. Mr Culbert is married with two children and lives locally in Hampshire.
